What is the function Generator Automatic Voltage Regulator AVR?

An automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is used to turn fluctuating voltage into constant voltage levels.

R230 is an analog AVR with power controlled by transistors. It is designed for alternators with a SHUNT excitation. R230 controls the excitation current in order to maintain the output voltage of the alternator. R230 is very reliable in terms of voltage regulation, simple to set, simple to use and durability

Description of Generator Automatic Voltage Regulator AVR

R230 is a half-wave phase-controlled thyristor type Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) and form part of the excitation system for a brush-less generator.

Automatic Voltage Regulator AVR includes under-speed and sensing loss protection features. Excitation power is derived directly from the generator terminals.

Positive voltage builds up from residual levels is ensured by the use of efficient semiconductors in the power circuit of the AVR.

AVR R230 is linked with the main stator windings and the exciter field windings to provide closed-loop control of the output voltage with load regulation of +/- 1.0%.

Automatic Voltage Regulator AVR derives a sample voltage from the output windings for voltage control purposes. Responding to this voltage, the AVR controls the power fed to the exciter field, and thus the main field, to maintain the output voltage within the specified limits, compensating for load, temperature, speed and power factor of the generator.

Settings on R230 Generator Automatic Voltage Regulator AVR.

  • Potentiometer P1: voltage setting
  • Potentiometer P2: stability setting
  • Potentiometer ST4: remote voltage setting
  • Jumper: frequency, U/F function,
  • Strap ST3: frequency selection
  • LAM function

Control:

VOLT: Used to adjust generator output voltage

STAB: Prevents voltage hunting (clockwise increase the damping effect). The correct setting can be found by running the generator at no load and slowly turning the stability control anti-clockwise until the generator voltage starts to become unstable.

UFO: Under Speed Protection

Precautions to take when installing Generator Automatic Voltage Regulator AVR

  1. Before running the generator, turn the VOLT control fully anti-clockwise.
  2. Turn STAB control to the midway position.
  3. Connect a suitable voltmeter (0-300V ac) across the line to the neutral of the generator.
  4. Start Genset, and run on no load at nominal frequency e.g 50-53Hz
  5. Red LED refers to the Power of AVR.
  6. Carefully turn VOLT control clockwise until the rated voltage is reached.
  7. If instability is present at rated voltage, refer to STAB adjustment, then re-adjust voltage if necessary.
  8. Voltage adjustment is now completed.
