Power Factor Improvement
Power Factor Improvement
Power Factor Improvement involves installing capacitive energy to counter inductive energy in an electrical system. Poor power factor is caused by inductive loads such as motors, coils, transformers. These loads require reactive power to generate magnetic fields thus leading to a lagging current and hence low power factor. Energy Act of 2019 as set out by Energy & Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) requires that power factor in an electrical system should be at or above 0.9. A poor power factor surcharge is applied on monthly KPLC bill each time power factor is below 0.9.
Popular power factor improvement system comprises of the following
- Power factor controller
- Capacitors
- Switching contactors
- Protection circuit breakers
- Panel cooling fans
- Control accessories
These components are available in various world-reknown manufacturers such as Lovato, Schneider Electric, ABB, Epcos
