As per the conditions for supply of electrical energy, Power Factor in an electrical installation should be at or above 0.9 lagging as stipulated in the schedule of tariffs and rates provided under the Energy Act of 2019 set out by Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). This is enforced by Kenya Power & Lighting Company Limited (KPLC) during electricity billing. A surcharge / penalty is applied on the bill each time power factor is less than 0.9. The rate of surcharge is computed based on the difference between current power factor against the required minimum 0.9. This implies that the lower the power factor, the higher the surcharge.
